The Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC) is a government agency that is responsible for the promotion of tourism, support tourism sector investments, and offer limited incentives to the investors. Their mission is to provide leadership in the development of a strong and vibrant tourism industry which contributes to sustainable economic growth, job creation, poverty alleviation, and protection of the natural and cultural environment. In an effort to further develop the country, the LTDC has imposed a compulsory tourism levy.
The Lesotho Tourism Levy is a tax paid by tourists for specific travel and tourism services offered in Lesotho and it will be used for the development and maintenance of tourism, and in the long run provide job opportunities for the unemployed within the tourism sector. This means that if a tourist would like to visit Lesotho, they would be liable to pay the tourism levy at the border before entering the country.
Many of our partners in Lesotho providing Roof of Africa Tours with activities and accommodation have been paying this levy since 1 October 2022. These costs have been absorbed by us.
What about the new Tourism Levy at the Sani Top Border Post?
From the 1st of April 2024, the levy was implemented at the Sani Pass Border Gate. Acting LTDC Public Relations Manager Mr. Molapo Matela told the Agency that effective from Monday, all visitors with foreign passports shall pay an entrance fee and Tourism Levy of M100 upon entering the Sani Pass Gate.
For private individuals the levy will be R100, and for tour operators the levy will be R50.
